Mentoring is a structured, one-to-one relationship or partnership that focuses on the needs of mentored participants. If done correctly, it encourages individuals to develop to their fullest potential.
Mentoring can be a rewarding experience, but it is a big decision that requires serious commitments. To be an effective and responsible mentor, you have to commit to do the following and more:
- Make contact with your mentee regularly or at least once per month (e.g., phone, email, or face-to-face if possible)
- Develop a trusting and professional relationship
- Assist mentee with leadership development
- Foster a caring and supporting relationship
- Provide ongoing support to your mentee especially in the early stages of the mentoring program
By serving as a mentor, you will affect the personal and professional development of one of tomorrow’s toastmaster leaders. Your willingness to share the wisdom you have collected over the years with a mentee who is just beginning the communication and leadership journey will be immensely beneficial and fast track their leadership development. As a mentor you will benefit from participation as well by:
- Creating a legacy
- Serving as a role model
- Demonstrating your leadership abilities
- Networking with peers
- Enhancing your skills
- Seeing growth in your mentee
So if you are contemplating of becoming a mentor, don’t delay! Check with your VP of Education and find yourself a match – someone who can leverage from your experience and expertise. If you are already a mentor, make sure you stay in contact with your mentee and continue to foster the relationship you have already developed.
